Why did I fail?

Reason given Description How to fix it

There are a hundred different ways to fail the road test. New ways to fail are created everyday. Here are some common mistakes and a brief explanation as to why it may have led to a failure. Sometimes it's obvious, sometimes it's not. Road test evaluation sheet.

Unable to parallel park

you hit the curb, you were too far from the curb, you used too much space to park, unable to maneuver the car into the spot, too much maneuvering familiarize yourself with the steps. pay special attention to your closeness to the curb. improve your judgment
Unable to do a 3point turn

ran out of space, too much maneuvering, could not maneuver, went forward or reversed more than you needed too a three point turn should be done in three steps not four or five. familiarize yourself with the steps and the proper positioning of your vehicle. the positioning of your vehicle may change depending on how wide or narrow the street is.
Failed to yield the right of way

to a pedestrian or vehicle when turning, when pulling out of a parking spot, when reversing into a parking spot, when switching lanes, when coming from a stop sign familiarize yourself with the rules of right of way. you must know in every situation who has the right of way.
Too slow/Impedes traffic flow

(A) too slow on turns, too slow driving straight, (B) stopping when you're not supposed to stop, not going when you should have gone (A) Maximum speed is 30mph. A typical minimum speed limit on the test is 20mph.  Average speed on the road test should be around 23.5 mph but your actual speed is relative to the street that you are on. Large streets stay close to 30mph, medium streets stay around 25mph, small streets stay around 21 mph. It is a common misconception that driving slow is better on the road test but driving slow does not give the examiner an accurate assessment of your driving abilities, Anybody can drive at 5mph. (B) Know your right of way
Speed excessive for conditions

you are driving  over the speed limit, you are driving too fast in rainy or snowy conditions, you are driving too fast on a street that is in poor condition, you are driving too fast in hazardous conditions reduce your speed depending on the conditions of the road or weather. The maximum speed limit on local roads is 30mph
Poor steering control

Swerving, swinging to the left or right on your turns, swinging too far out into the street when pulling out of a parking spot, an apparent loss of control of the vehicle when doing certain maneuvers, poor hand position, sloppy steering develop a uniform way of turning. hand over hand is the preferred method of most driving schools. reduce your speed when doing certain maneuvers, try not to step on the gas too much. your turning should be smooth, your turning method should be smooth and your turns should come out nice and straight and even.
Accident obvious.  whether it is your fault or not an accident will lead to a failure or reschedule of your test (which is basically the same thing) Even if it's not your fault an accident does not give you an opportunity to finish the test therefore you will have to reschedule.
Serious violation

Turning onto the wrong side of road, cutting the yellow line on a left turn, going thru a red light, going thru a yellow light, stopping on a crosswalk or in the intersection, not stopping for a school bus, not stopping for an emergency vehicle, passing on the right, not signaling, turning into the wrong lane, not looking over shoulder, hitting an animal, driving with one hand, taking both hands off the wheel at a stop, no seatbelt, lights not on when raining, radio on, answering cell phone and just about anything else that you could possibly get a traffic ticket for. familiarize your self with the rules of the road. reread the learners manual.
Dangerous action

cutting off a vehicle, swerving, coming too close to parked cars, coming too close to the curb, hitting the curb, near accident, examiner felt the need to take control of the vehicle by either stopping the vehicle or by grabbing the steering wheel,  be careful of your speed and proximity to other vehicles. Remember you are being judged by another person. Their perception of how close you are may be different from yours. Remember the examiners are not mind readers, they don't know that  your are going to turn at the last second to avoid hitting something. All they know is that in their mind you are coming too close to an object and with too much speed and they need to react.
Need more training/exceeded points

unable to start the vehicle. you accumulated more than 30 points.

your road test results are based on a point system the maximum amount of points that can be taken off is 30. more

Extremely wide turns turns that are wider than they should be. start your turns earlier, turn the wheel more, turn the wheel quicker, develop better judgment, become less fearful of hitting parked cars. Always enter the street by turning into the closest lane (right turn = right lane, left turn = left lane
